I was in Madison a couple of weeks ago and ran into Gary Johnson. He told me that the volunteer Fire Department will be no more in the near future. Madison will now cover Shorewood Hills. Wow - that made me sad as so many of my great memories are associated with the Fire Department - like the 4th of July activities, the fireworks and everything the Fire Department did for all of us who lived in the village. A sincere thanks to EVERYONE who volunteered! Great people - like part of the family.

Mike - It is so nice to see you here. I thought Gale was your wife, but I wasn't sure. A few years ago I felt inspired by one of those "write to your favorite teacher and say thank you" memes, the kind that you see periodically. So I wrote to Delores Lillige, who was our 5th grade teacher, and told her some of my memories of her class. I heard back from her a few weeks later ... she lives in Florida now. This summer I happened to pass through Lafayette, Indiana (make that WEST Lafayette). I stayed overnight with Danny Weiss and Felicia Roberts. Felicia remembered another one of the great teachers and classrooms, the combined 3rd and 4th grade class of Mrs. Cox that Sue's brother was in. Shorewood Hills Elementary School had some unusual and exceptional teachers. My brother Stan has also been in touch with Mrs. Cox, who went on to get a PhD in education and become a professor at Cal State Long Beach, which is relatively near where he lives.

Hi everyone,

I have enjoyed reading the latest conversation and wanted to let you know I commented using my wife Gale's account until mine was approved which it now is.  Looking forward to more.

Hi Jack - I took that bus a lot, too! You won't find this surprising - the height genes are still running strong in the family. I'm 6'3" and my daughter is 6'6". My husband is 6'7". Dad joked that if we keep marrying tall people - we'll breed ourselves into extinction. ;-) Our old house is for sale now. I actually went with my Mom to Dad's Class of '47 reunion last year - it was fun to see a lot of familiar faces - Chuck Webster was the emcee.

We were on Oak Way, just off Blackhawk Dr., so l could watch from the kitchen window to see the bus pass the Four Corners going to the end of the line on Lake Mendota Dr., ...then run there to catch it to go to West High or downtown ...without waiting.  I know the Bleckwenn house, and almost all the others in Shorewood, from my paper route memories. My uncle and cousins lived closer to you on Edgehill Drive.

Hi Jack - I remember my Dad speaking fondly of you! Dad lived in Shorewood since he was a one-year-old! Where did you live?

Hi Dan! Thanks so much for your work on the Web site and for working with me to get the brick for Dad at the West High entrance! It meant a lot to my Dad - probably the best present we ever gave him! A reunion of Shorewood folks would be lots of fun. Like the picture idea, too!

Great conversation!  I enjoyed the same kinds of experiences growing up in Shorewood a generation before most of you. (Ted Bleckwenn was a couple years ahead of me) Started kindergarten in a room at the village hall before the new school was built (1937) Still in touch with three classmates. I published a weekly newspaper, The Shorewood Chronicle, for seven years until 1952. West High class of 1950 and UW 1954.  Now retired and living in Detroit area, and visit Madison and Shorewood occasionally.

Fun to see the sudden barrage of emails about Shorewood. Isn't there some anniversary coming up when we can invite all former residents back for a festive weekend? 150th? I'm still in touch with classmates from kindergarten! Probably be fun to collect scanned photographs from the pre-digital days on a Filickr site.....

My brother, Bill, West class of '77 - goes to reunions of Mrs. Cox's 3rd-4th grade class! Mrs. Cox comes to reunions when they take place - what fun! I saw many of the volunteer firemen at my Dad's funeral a couple of years ago - it meant SO much that they came. Joe Fait and I had such a nice visit that day. I love driving through Shorewood when I'm in town. So nice to hear from everyone and reminisce! Any of your families still live in Shorewood?

Yes, I have to agree living in Shorewood was the best. The pool was great but the beach was where we learned to swim. I can remember playing in the corn fields where the soccer fields are now. Hanging out at the beach and dropping our Halloween pumpkins off the bridge on Lake Mendota Drive and watching them explode are some of many happy memories. Being a member of the SHFD was where I realized I wanted to make that line of work my career.
